Ask our dentists at Carbonear about dental fillings. A bonded filling is similar in colour to your teeth and blends in more naturally in comparison to traditional silver amalgam fillings.
Why do I need to have a filling?
A filling is required when tooth decay has caused a hole (cavity) to form on a tooth surface. You might also need a filling if one of your current fillings needs to be replaced, or if a tooth has cracked or has been damaged.
A bonded filling is appropriate when the cavity is small and the area is not exposed to a lot of force in the mouth. If the cavity is large, or if it is on a molar and you grind your teeth, a bonded filling may not be your best option. Our dentists will recommend what filling is best for your smile.
Don't avoid the dentist!
What happens when I don't get a filling?
If you don't get a filling, the cavity will get worse or lead to more severe problems, such as bone loss. A cavity left untreated can also lead to an abscess.
If you haven't been to the dentist in years, make sure you go soon! Dental decay generally becomes painful by the time it hits the nerves. By this stage, a filling is often not possible and more extensive treatment is required such as root canal treatment or tooth extraction.
How do I know if I need a filling?
It is not always obvious if you need a filling. The best way to be certain is by booking an appointment with your dentist. If you you experience any of the following symptoms, make sure to call our office!
- Sensitivity to hot or cold, pressure, or sweet things
- A sharp or throbbing pain
- Pain on biting or chewing
